In der Fachrichtung Tanz hatte neben dem Unterricht in den verschiedenen Stilen des modernen Tanzes und Ballet, sowie Choreo- graphie und Produktionstechnik eben gerade das Theo- logiestudium (Bibelschule) einen großen Stellenwert. Durch die überkonfessionelle Ausbildung habe ich einen neuen, weiteren Blick auf Gott bekommen. Ich entdeckte auch, daß gerade im Bereich Tanztheater es um das Gesamtkunstwerk des Stückes geht, bei dem Licht, Räumlichkeiten, Requisiten, Sound eine gleich wichtige Rolle spielen. Da kamen dann weitere Gaben, die ich in meinem Leben zuvor immer wieder leben konnte, ins Spiel, wie künstlerische Gestaltung und auch im kreativen Entwicklungsprozess im Gespräch mit Gott zu bleiben und mich nicht zufrieden zu geben, bis es sich stimmig anfühlte, Wahrheit zu suchen, die den Men- schen, den ich beschenken wollte, tief berührt und tröstet. Stimmig, so wie ich an Gott glaube, Gott erlebe, aber auch stimmig, wie ich mein Leben und das Leben der Menschen um mich herum wahrnehme. Und darin liegt oft eine unheimlich große Spannung. Die muss ich auch gar nicht auflösen, es sei denn es ergibt sich im Prozess. Die Dar- stellung an sich ist ja schon ein Gebet, ein Hinhalten der Situation zu Gott. Wenn Gott dabei neue Verbindungen und Ant- worten schenkt, auf alte oder neue Fra- gen, ist das eine ganz tiefe Freude. Ist Tanztheater für Sie Anbetung? Hmmm … Anbetung ist ein etwas vorbelasteter Begriff. Ich möchte mich in der Themenwahl und der Art der Darstellung nicht einschränken lassen. Es ist gut, wenn Jesus mit meiner Kunst verherrlicht wird. Manche Leute erwarten jedoch, dass nur das Schöne und Herrliche ge- zeigt wird. Aber wenn das alles ist, was wir zu sagen ha- ben, wäre es für mich christliche Propaganda. Wir leben nicht in einer heilen Welt, auch Christen haben Unfälle, erleiden Niederlagen. Viele Psalmgebete in der Bibel sind schwere Anklagen. Als Christin weiß ich aber, dass Jesus mit seiner Liebe und Herrlichkeit in unsere aussichtslo- sen Situationen hinein kommt. Gott ist größer als unser Leid. Anbetung heißt doch auch, in allen Aspekten mei- nes Daseins Gott zu lieben und an ihm festzuhalten, vor und in ihm zu leben. Was dürfen wir uns dann unter christlichem Tanztheater vorstellen? Die Themen meiner Stücke interpretieren auch andere Choreographen. Von daher würde ich es nicht „christ- liches“ Tanztheater nennen - der Hauptunterschied liegt College). As a result of the non-denominational training, I received a new, wider view of God. I also discovered that precisely in the area of dance theatre it is a matter of a total work of art, where lighting, space, props, sound… are equally important. Here further gifts, which in the past I had time and again made part of my life, came into play, like artistic design and remaining in conversation with God during a development process and not to be satisfied until everything fits together: see- king truth which touches deeply and comforts those I want to present something. Fitting together like the way I experience God, but also fitting together like the way I perceive my life and the life of the people around me. This often is a huge tension. And it does not necessarily have to be resolved, un- less it happens as the process unfolds. The artistic process and the representati- on in itself are already prayers, bringing the issues before God. And it is exciting, when in this time he shows new connec- tions and answers, coming from old or new questions. Is dance theatre worship for you? Hmmm … the word Worship is pretty much loaded with preconceptions, isn’t it? I do not wish to limit myself in the choice of subject and the style of pre- sentation. It is precious to glorify Jesus through art. But that is not the whole picture. Some people expect the beautiful and splendid to be displayed only. But if that was all we say, it would be Christian propaganda. We do not live in a perfect world. As Christians we also have accidents, experience set- backs... Many psalm prayers in the Bible are bitter comp- laints. As a Christian, however, I know Jesus comes with his life and glory into our hopeless situations. God is gre- ater than our suffering. Worship furthermore means to love God in all aspects of my existence and to hold onto him, to live before and in him. What can we then picture under the name Christian dance theatre? The themes of my pieces are also interpreted by other choreographers. I therefore do not name it “Christian” dance theatre – the main difference I would say is the un- derlying world view. Here you find, of course, that there is the central faith in the midst of all suffering there is a loving God; you find the hope our difficulties are not the end, but in all things we are embedded in the presence of his loving kindness. © Paul Yates - www.paulYates.com About the artist
