My prayer is to create an open space in which Jesus can touch those watching and those participating. Where I myself risk being honest and get to the bottom of battles and failures without embellishing the picture, it is more likely that others will have the courage, as a first step, to be open to themselves. In this way it is sharing what moves me with the au- dience, painting or dancing pictures of a heartfelt, and sometimes painfully honest relationship with Jesus. It often happens that art opens up areas of our soul we were previously not so conscious of. What we see is asso- ciated with our own life-events and experiences. You personally went through a difficult time: some years ago you were diagnosed with rheumatoid polyarthritis, a chronic inflammatory illness of the joints. The diagnosis caught me completely unprepared in 2006, that’s true. The pain, but above all the hopelessness threa- tened to overwhelm me. I was in deep despair about what to do with life now and I constantly asked God: “What were the studies in Australia for? What use is all that to me, now that I can no longer dance?« How did you find your way back out of that? During this time, I came to know Jesus in a different way again. All the years, I had worked very much and very hard: teaching, continuously training myself etc. But in all this I had lost confidence to realise my own ideas as larger scale dance theatre. I always had to become better and train harder. Through the illness, I was now all the more dependent on Jesus. I noticed how little I can achieve alone, and how much I need him. When I was despaired especially deeply and helpless, again I laid everything before Jesus and came to see: even if I do not see any way forward and have no more strength, Jesus is here, and I am secure in him. I experienced how my condition and pain ultimately do nothing to alter the fact that God is good and friendly and that his love and holiness permeate and carry all the misery of the world (including my own small portion) – the level of truth deeper, so to speak, than what we can perceive and understand with our five senses. Since then I have had peace about the illness. There is still frequent pain and I am limited in many ways, but the medication is now well balanced. I am thankful for wonderful friends and doctors who have supported me so firmly during this time. But the illness did bring me to the point of opening myself for choreography and the development of full-length dance theatre productions again. »You can still dance so far«, I said to myself. »If you don’t make a whole production now, it will soon no longer be possible at all.« About the artist
